01/14/2009 | New Aberdeen Study Reveals Obstacles for Optimal Application Performance in Virtualized Environments

Lack of application visibility and inability to anticipate application performance issue limit the success of virtualization

RTP, N.C. – January 14, 2009 – BlueStripe Software, the only provider of APM 2.0 solutions for dynamic data centers, today announced that a new Aberdeen Group report reveals that when Best-in-Class organizations are conducting virtualization projects, they want to ensure those projects do not negatively impact the performance of business-critical applications.

The report, co-sponsored by BlueStripe, reinforces the IT management problems BlueStripe set out to solve – application management across all servers, both physical and virtual. The report, released today, highlights results from an Aberdeen Group survey-based benchmark study of 137 end user organizations. Significant findings reveal that lack of visibility into application transaction flow, and inability to anticipate performance issues while conducting virtualization projects, are the top obstacles for achieving the optimal level of application performance in virtualized environments.

“Even though organizations could experience significant cost savings from conducting virtualization projects, these benefits diminish if they don’t have capabilities in place for effective management of application performance,” said Bojan Simic, research analyst with Aberdeen. “Enterprises can better manage their business-critical applications when they have a single platform to discover application interdependencies, automate the identification of performance bottlenecks, and implement internal processes across application, systems, and network management teams, to effectively address performance issues.”

The research also shows that only 31% of organizations surveyed have the ability to discover all connections that impact application performance in virtual environments. Additionally, only 29% of organizations have the ability to assess interdependencies between virtual and physical systems, while only 24% have tools in place for the automated discovery of applications in virtualized environments.

“Aberdeen’s findings validate what our customers are saying,” said Chris Neal, founder and CEO of BlueStripe Software. “They need to better understand what is impacting their complex applications in today’s increasingly dynamic environments. In today’s data centers, enterprises must take a service-level driven approach to managing their business-critical applications. Only by managing the application, not the hardware or the systems on which they reside, can companies truly understand what impacts the performance of critical applications and quickly take action to resolve those issues.”

Aberdeen’s analysis reveals 10 capabilities that make a significant impact on application performance in virtualized environments. These capabilities include:

  • Ability to assess interdependencies between virtual and physical systems;
  • Ability to map the virtual architecture;
  • Formal communication channels between systems and application management teams;
  • Tools for automated discovery of servers and applications in virtualized environments;
  • A unified platform for monitoring physical and virtualized infrastructure; and
  • Automated identification of performance bottlenecks.
